Preparation strategy

Preparing for NET Psychology is not preparing for a Master's exam again. The paper rewards recognition across the whole discipline rather than depth in the three or four areas your MA happened to emphasise, and that difference decides how you should spend your months.

Start from the syllabus, not from a book

Print the official unit list and mark every unit honestly: taught well, taught badly, never taught. Most candidates have three or four units in the third column — commonly psychometrics, biopsychology, or applied areas their department did not offer. Those units are where marks are cheapest, because you are starting from nothing and any structured reading moves you a long way.

Paper I is not a general-knowledge paper

Teaching aptitude, research aptitude, reasoning, data interpretation, ICT, environment and higher-education-system questions are learnable and repetitive. Candidates from Psychology often neglect Paper I because it feels unserious, then lose the qualification on it. Research aptitude in particular overlaps almost entirely with what you already know from methodology — claim those marks.

Work backwards from past papers, early

Do not save past papers for revision. Attempt one in the first fortnight, untimed and open-book if you like. It tells you what the examiner means by a unit title, which is never what the title suggests. "Learning" is not asked as a lecture on Skinner; it is asked as one line about a schedule of reinforcement.

A structure that works over four months

• Weeks 1–4 — the never-taught units, first pass, from one standard text each. Do not take notes yet.
• Weeks 5–9 — the taught-badly units, plus Paper I in daily half-hours rather than weekend blocks.
• Weeks 10–13 — full-length timed attempts, one every three days, each followed by an analysis longer than the attempt itself.
• Final fortnight — only your own condensed notes and past papers. No new source enters your preparation in the last two weeks.

What actually separates qualifiers

Not hours. Two things: the honesty of that first self-assessment, and whether you analyse your mock attempts or merely collect scores. A mock you did not analyse taught you nothing and cost you three hours.

On coaching

Useful if it enforces a schedule you cannot enforce alone, and for Paper I. It is not a substitute for reading a standard text once, properly. Judge any course by whether it makes you attempt and analyse papers, not by how many hours of video it ships.
