Hero
Counselling psychology works with people facing difficulty — stress, relationships, transitions, grief, low mood, decisions — rather than primarily with diagnosable illness.
It is the field most often confused with clinical psychology, and the difference is not seniority. It is which problems you work on, where, and under what training.

Regulation notice
Read this before choosing a course.
The regulatory picture for counselling in India is less clear-cut than for clinical psychology, and that is exactly why it needs care.
- "Clinical Psychologist" is a regulated designation requiring RCI recognition and registration on the Central Rehabilitation Register.
- "Counsellor" is not protected in the same way. In practice this means the title is used by people with very different training, from postgraduate psychology to a weekend course.
- The consequence for you as a student: the market is full of certificate courses whose value varies enormously and which no statutory body vouches for.
What to do about it. Judge a counselling course by what it can be verified against — a recognised university degree, supervised practice hours, a named and checkable supervisor, and a professional body whose membership requirements you can read. Ask what the qualification lets you do, and ask for that in writing.
Where a role sits in a clinical or rehabilitation setting, RCI requirements may apply to it. Check rehabcouncil.nic.in for what is registered.
The ladder
- Class 11–12 — Psychology helps; check individual university requirements.
- Bachelor's — BA or BSc Psychology (3–4 years).
- Master's — MA or MSc, in Psychology, Counselling Psychology or Applied Psychology depending on the university.
- Supervised practice. The step that separates a qualification from competence, and the one most often skipped. Insist on it.
- Continuing development — specific approaches, populations, supervision of your own.
Shorter than the clinical route, with a correspondingly wider and less regulated market. That cuts both ways: easier entry, more responsibility on you to choose training that will stand up.
The fields inside it — each a future page
Working inside schools with learning difficulty, behaviour, transitions, exam pressure and adolescent development — usually alongside teachers and parents rather than in a private room. India's growing school-counsellor requirement makes this one of the most accessible entry points in the whole discipline.
College and career counselling
Supporting students through course choice, academic difficulty, independence and early-career decisions. Distinct from placement advice: the work is helping someone decide, not telling them what to pick.
Marital, couple and family counselling
Working with relationships as the unit rather than the individual. The skill that defines it is holding more than one person's account of the same events without taking a side.
Workplace and employee counselling
Confidential support inside organisations — stress, burnout, conflict, transitions. Sits at the boundary with organisational psychology, and the confidentiality line is the whole job.
Crisis and helpline counselling
Brief, high-stakes contact, often anonymous and often once. A very different skill set from ongoing work: containment and safety rather than exploration.
Rehabilitation and disability counselling
Working with people and families adjusting to disability or long-term condition. This is where counselling most often meets RCI's registered territory — check the requirements for the specific role.
Skills
- Listening without steering. Much harder than it sounds, and the thing training spends most time on.
- Holding the boundary. When to refer on is a clinical judgement and the most important one you make.
- Confidentiality, including its limits — and being able to explain those limits before they matter.
- Working across language and culture. In India, the person in front of you may not share your first language or your assumptions about family, and both change the work.
- Noticing your own reactions rather than acting on them.
Salary — ranges, sourced, dated
No figures here — they would mislead more readers than they helped. What determines earnings:
- Setting. School, NGO, corporate and private practice pay on entirely different bases.
- Employment shape. Salaried, sessional and fee-per-session are different careers financially.
- Verifiable training. In an unregulated market, checkable credentials are what employers pay for.
- Referral network, which is slow to build and is most of what private practice runs on.
Realities
The market is uneven. Because the title is not protected, you will compete with people trained very differently — and be judged by employers who cannot always tell the difference. Verifiable training is your protection.
Emotional labour is the job, not a side effect. Supervision is not optional if you intend to last.
Change is slow, partial, and often invisible to you. People improve after they stop coming, and you frequently never learn it.
You will meet things beyond your scope. Recognising that fast and referring well is the mark of a good counsellor, not a limited one.
Compared with its neighbours
| Counselling | Clinical | Organisational | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical focus | Adjustment, life difficulty | Diagnosable disorder | Behaviour at work |
| Regulated in India | Not uniformly | Yes — RCI | No |
| Usual setting | School, college, workplace, private | Hospital, clinic | Company, consultancy |
| Training length | Shorter | Longest | Shortest to first job |
| Market risk | Unregulated titles | Limited training places | Employer-dependent |
Overseas opportunities
Counselling is regulated differently again abroad — in several countries more tightly than in India, with counselling and psychotherapy having their own registers separate from psychology.
What the opportunities generally look like:
- School and student services — international schools and university wellbeing services recruit counsellors, and the work translates well.
- Community and third-sector services — NGOs, charities and community mental-health services, often the most accessible route.
- Employee assistance and workplace wellbeing — a growing global market that values counselling training directly.
- Further training abroad — many people convert by taking the destination country's own qualification, which is slower but removes the recognition question entirely.
| Country | The body to check |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | BACP · UKCP (accrediting bodies) · HCPC for practitioner psychologists |
| Australia | Psychology Board of Australia / AHPRA · ACA · PACFA |
| Canada | The provincial college for counselling therapy |
| United States | The state licensing board (LPC / LMHC titles vary by state) |
Nothing here states a current registration requirement, and deliberately so. These bodies change their routes. Find the authority, then read it.
Summary table — scannable, comparable
| Field inside counselling | Works mostly with | Setting | Distinguishing demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| School counselling | Children, adolescents | Schools | Works through teachers and parents |
| College & career | Students, early career | Colleges | Helping decide, not advising |
| Marital & family | Couples, families | Private, NGO | Multiple accounts, no side-taking |
| Workplace | Employees | Companies, EAPs | Confidentiality under pressure |
| Crisis & helpline | Anyone, once | Helplines | Containment, not exploration |
| Rehabilitation | Disability, long-term condition | Rehab, NGO | May fall under RCI |
Where to study
In a field where titles are not protected, what you can verify is what counts. Prefer a recognised university qualification with supervised practice over a certificate with neither.

FAQs
No — it is different. Shorter training, less regulation, and a harder job market to navigate precisely because it is less regulated.
Can I become a counsellor with a short certificate course?
You can call yourself one; whether anyone will employ you, and whether you will be competent, are different questions. Judge a course by supervised hours and verifiable recognition.
Do school counsellors need RCI registration?
Not generally — RCI registers rehabilitation and clinical categories. Requirements differ by role, state and school board, so check for the specific post.
Can I move from counselling into clinical practice later?
The clinical route has its own recognised qualification, so it means entering that route rather than converting. Plan for it early if it is where you want to end up.
