Panjab University is one of north India's oldest universities, established under the Panjab University Act of 1947 and funded by both the central and state governments, with its main campus across Sectors 14 and 25 of Chandigarh. Its Department of Psychology has run since 1959 and is the strongest-evidenced place to study psychology in the Tricity: it offers a two-year MA in Psychology, a Post-MA Diploma in Professional Counseling and Psychotherapy, and a PhD programme, with faculty research spanning clinical, cognitive, counselling, health, organisational, sports and positive psychology. The university holds a NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.68 on a four-point scale and placed 35th among Indian universities in NIRF 2025 — third among state public universities.
Note for aspiring clinical psychologists: the department's MA and PhD are academic degrees; RCI recognition, which governs licensure to practise clinical psychology, does not apply to them — a distinction this directory always shows rather than blurs.
