Somebody has probably told you that you are a visual learner, or a kinaesthetic one, and that you should study accordingly. It may have been a teacher, a counsellor, or a worksheet you filled in at fourteen. It was said kindly and it was almost certainly wrong — and if you are studying psychology, you are in the unusual position of being able to check that for yourself.

The claim that was tested
It is important to separate two things, because the myth survives by blurring them.
The first is that people have preferences. That is true and uninteresting. Plenty of us would rather look at a diagram than read a paragraph.
The second is the meshing hypothesis: that matching how you are taught to your preferred style makes you learn better. That is the claim schools act on, and it is the one that was tested.
What the test required
In 2008, Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork reviewed the field for Psychological Science in the Public Interest. Their contribution was not the verdict so much as the standard: to show that meshing works, a study must classify learners by style, randomly assign them to different teaching methods, and find a crossover interaction — visual learners doing better with visual teaching and auditory learners doing better with auditory teaching.
That design is not exotic. It is what the claim means.
What they found
Across a large body of work, almost no study had used the design at all. Of those that had, several produced results that contradicted the hypothesis outright. Virtually none produced the crossover.
As the authors put it, the existence of a preference says nothing about what that preference implies — least of all that an educator should organise teaching around it.
Why it survived anyway
This is the part I find genuinely interesting, and it is psychology rather than education.
The idea is kind. It tells a struggling student that they are not weak, only mismatched. It gives a teacher something actionable. It comes with a questionnaire, and a questionnaire feels like measurement. Every one of those is a reason to believe something, and none of them is evidence.
A review of thirty-seven studies found the belief held by around 89% of teachers worldwide, with endorsement above 95% in some countries. Training in education or neuroscience reduces it. It does not remove it.
What to do instead
The honest answer is that the method should match the material, not the person. You cannot learn the anatomy of the neuron without looking at a diagram, and you cannot learn an argument without reading it.
What does have evidence behind it is unglamorous and works for everybody: retrieval practice — testing yourself rather than re-reading — and spacing the work out rather than massing it. Neither requires knowing what kind of learner you are.
